Sony to extend Animax to UK?

Ukanime.com have spotted that Sony have registered Anime + as a channel in in the UK. Doing some digging here at Otaku News we've spotted that this seems to be part of a move on Sony's part to widen it's AXN, Animax and Sony Entertainment Television brands. It follows the apointment of Tom Davidson to vice president of international networks in May. It's probably quite important to note that according to this press release Mr Davidson is based in the London Sony headquarters!

Jetix Speak Out About Naruto TV Cuts

UK viewers will no doubt have noticed that the UK airing of Naruto has been further cut down from the US Toonami cut. There has been much discussion regarding the poor quality of edits, such as the use of static low resolution screen shots or editing out entirely of important shots rather than relying solely on the toned down Toonami edits.

A forum user at Animeuknews.net got the following response after e-mailing Jetix:
"Jetix UK aims to provide exciting and entertaining content for our audience whilst being a responsible kids broadcaster. We therefore must ensure the content of our programmes is suitable for our target audience and we follow strict OFCOM regulations to ensure that these standards are adhered to. Where certain content from the original has been deemed unsuitable for our younger viewers it has been edited from the version which Jetix will be broadcasting. These edits are subtle and we don't believe alter the quality of the viewing experience. If Jetix fans in the UK wish to view the uncut version of Naruto Manga is releasing the DVD of the first 13 episodes, entitled Naruto Unleased, on 21 August. The next 13 episodes will be released on DVD at the end of November."

New Shows to Start on Jetix UK 22nd July: Naruto and Pucca

We're sure most of you know that Naruto starts on Jetix on the 22nd, but fans might be also pleasantly surprised to hear that the Pucca animated series is also showing. Pucca is a Korean mascot character, whose face is plastered across a huge range of merchandise much like Hello Kitty, and come to think of it a certain boy Ninja.

Naruto is being shown at 8pm, set those Sky Plus reminders!

FuyuCon UK Convention Set For October 2007

The good people from the East Midlands Anime Group have arranged a convention for Friday 19th October to Sunday 21st October 2007. FuyuCon has capacity for 500 members and will be based at the Britannia Hotel Nottingham. Full weekend membership costs £40.

Anime expert Helen McCarthy will be the guest for FuyuCon, it will be her first UK anime convention appearance in a while. Helen regularly attends US conventions such as A-Kon.

FuyuCon is a welcome addition to the UK anime convention calendar. Since the capacity is 500, we suggest you book as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment.

London Barbican Anime Screenings

Following on from our news about Children's anime screenings, it seems that the London Barbican have gone Japanese cinema crazy! Not only will they be showing some great bits of anime, they'll also holding a Toru Takemitsu season featuring films the composer has scored.

Selected shows will be introduced by anime expert Helen McCarthy, I've been to past events at other venues, and often they get so called anime experts to introduce shows, or give talks, and it's clear they don't know what they're talking about, Helen however is a real anime expert, having written numerous high quality books on the subject and many magazine articles.

Anime wise they'll be showing:

Saturday, 8 July at 1.45pm: Akira
If you haven't seen this film on a big screen yet, then get over to London and see the anime classic.

Saturday, 8 July 4.15pm: Tokyo Godfathers
Satoshi Kon's superb film about three homeless people's adventures at Christmas. This charming feature is an all time favourite of the Otaku News crew.

Sunday 9 July, 1.45pm: Paranoia Agent: Episodes 1 To 4
Satoshi Kon's TV series, which proves to be very thought provoking, as a special bonus the series will be introduced by Helen McCarthy. We've got a review of Paranoia Agent here.

Sunday 9th July, 3.45pm: Makoto Shinkai Triple Bill
Shinkai became famous for producing anime from home using his computer! They'll be showing the cute She and Her Cat, along with Voices of a Distant Star (influenced by shows like Gunbuster), with a special UK Premiere of The Place Promised In Our Early Days. The triple bill will also be introduced by Helen McCarthy and is worth attending to hear what insight she has throw on director and his work.

In all cases we suggest you book now to avoid disappointment.

UK to get Inu Yasha Season One Box Set

We reported some time ago that UK company CPLG was listing Inu Yasha as a property that it was representing. AUN are new reporting that Play have listed a Season one UK box set of the anime at only £28, with a September release date.

Considering the length of this series and the time fans have had to wait, the news that Inu Yasha is being released at such a reasonable price is great news. There's no news yet as to which company will be handling it's UK release.

Naruto at London Expo

After lots of rumours and the tell tale booking of Naruto's dub Va Maile Flanagan, Eyeonanime have spotted confirmation of the companies involved with the series UK release via a London Expo download. It appears Jetix and Manga Entertainment will make the presentation together at 1pm, which will feature a Q & A with Flanagan and the premiere of the first episode.

We'll have to wait for the Expo to be sure but we imagine Manga will distribute DVDs and Jetix will air the show. We can only hope this will include uncut versions like the US release.

Tomo Dachi Northern Irish Anime Covention Coming Soon

Those good people at Tomo-Dachi have just sent us there latest press release, it contains more details about the Northern Irish convention set for 7th July to 9th July. Highlight's include US guests Tiffany Grant and Matt Greenfield, they'll both provide an interesting insight into the anime industry. Unfortunately, due to personal reasons anime and manga expert Jonathan Clements had to pull out, but has promised to attend the 2007 Tomo-Dachi.

The convention also promises a great selection of panels, workshops and other cool anime events. They'll also be playing a selection of traditional Japanese games such as Go and Shogi . Booking closes on May 30th, so get moving if you're interested! ^_^

Emily has just sent us some details about an event she's organising in London next month, Cosplay Cafe at Cafe Manga. Aimed at Cosplayers kameko (photographers) and their chums. It's set for Sunday 23rd April, 2pm-5.30pm, and includes fun activities like a photoshoot, a talk/workshop, a quiz, anime and live action screenings, along with a swap table. They'll even have goodies to give away too! ^_^

London J-Pop fans should get out their Sailor Suits and Gakuran and head over to J-Pop Go this Saturday, where they'll be having a Japanese School Disco theme at the Cafe Manga Venue. The nice folk at ADV Films UK are sponsoring the events and as an appropriate tie in will be promoting Cromartie High School. The venue opens at 7pm and the party goes on to 1am. It sounds like fun and will certainly make a great anime weekend, with the London Anime Club the next day.

The good folks from ADV Films UK and Cafe Manga have sent us details of their special anime screenings which will be running throughout March. They'll be showing both subbed versions of Noir, Last Exile and Kino’s Journey at the Central London venue starting from Thursday 9th March. The Manga cafe also inform us that they've introduced happy hours during 6pm to 7pm where they'll be offering 25% discount off all drinks, note that if the staff are in doubt they will ask for ID. All titles screened are rated 12 and are uncut.

The London MCM Expo is very happy to announce a pure Anime, Manga & Japanese Culture event for the UK to place in London, UK during July 2007 called 'Anime London'.

The ever growing London MCM Expo which takes place at Excel in London twice a year will still heavily feature ‘Anime Village’ bringing fans the best of Anime & Manga along with the many movie and TV related areas that it covers.

We now feel that it is time to bring a different kind event to the UK that will address the needs of the pure Anime, Manga & Japanese Culture
fan, this will not take away from existing Anime conventions or the
London MCM Expo but compliment them.

The folks from Tomo-Dachi have just sent us their latest press release, which reveals that Matt Greenfield will be one of the guests. Matt Greenfield is best known to anime fans as the co-founder of ADV Films, and has directed the dubbing of Neon Genesis Evangelion (making sure that "Father I hate you!" sounds just right! ^_-).

Paul over at Anime UK News.net has sent us the low down on a very interesting article they've just put on-line. Getting the views from the major players in the UK anime industry, the article recaps 2005 and gets various companies views on 2006. It's interesting to see all their separate takes on the achievements of the last 12 months.

The Otaku News Crew consider 2005 a very important year for the UK anime industry since it's the year that anime really went in the public eye, with more stores willing to stock it, more news papers writing positive and factually correct articles. Even Howl's Moving Castle got good fair write coverage too, while manga continues to be more easy to obtain in the UK. Taking into account where the UK anime scene was 3 or 4 years ago things have really progressed.

Studio Ghibli's Next Movie Will be Earthsea

Studio Ghibli have officially announced their next movie, which is due to hit Japan in July 2006. Gedo Senki (Gedo War History) is based on Ursula K. Le Guin's Tales from Earthsea Collection. Controversially Hayao Miyazaki son, Goro Miyazaki will be directing the film.

Tomo-Dachi a New Northern Ireland Convention

We've got news of a new anime convention in Northern Ireland, at the University of Ulster's Magee Campus in Londonderry. Tomo-Dachi is set for 7th 8th and 9th of July 2006 and looks like it's going to be great! With guests including veteran voice actress Tiffany Grant and writer, translator and man of many talents Jonathan Clements. The convention is the first of it's kind in Northern Ireland and has some really nice touches like anime related presents in everyone's room! We reckon it's worth going to for the "What Stupid People Say About Anime" segment alone, since we've heard many people say stupid things about anime! So clear your calendars for that week and get over to Londonderry! ^_^

We’ve had a message from ADV Films UK regarding the polls on its website. It seems the response has been far too low for ADV to gauge your opinions accurately; they are taking the responses seriously and significant responses will effect what they release. Launching new series in the UK can be expensive, and the choice of series can often be difficult for the British companies so ADV want to make sure they are in tune with fans requests.

We encourage every British fan to regularly take part in the polls, as well as encouraging other fans to do so especially for any series they feel strongly about.

The current poll asks which of the following series fans would like to see;
Gatchaman (known widely in it’s edited form as Battle of the Planets)
Gilgamesh
Samurai Gun
Area 88
Yugo the Negotiator

I’ve already voted for Gatchaman, Battle of the Planets was a childhood favourite and I’m looking forwards to seeing it uncut.

UK Anime Magazine Neo, are currently taking votes for their first Neo Awards "the only UK awards ceremony to celebrate the best in Asian Pop Culture" which will be held on Saturday 29th October.

Neo rightly point out that what makes the awards important is that the winner of each category is voted by the fans.

Viz are set to enter the European anime and manga market,partnering with Copyright Promotions Ltd they will form Viz Media B.V. Titles appearing in the press release include Bleach, Deko Boku Friends and Mar.

Convention Report: Ayacon 2005

Ayacon, one of the longest running UK Anime conventions, has repeated itself after a one year absence due to Amecon last year, and has certainly come back with one hell of a bang. Spanning three days from the 19th to the 22nd of August at Warwick Arts Centre just south of Coventry, this convention provided not only a bountiful selection of Anime, a masquerade and of course karaoke but also panels from a large variety of different sources, a pub quiz, two parties and even a concert from gothic j-rock group Blood. Boredom was never going to be an option...

Is KyuuCON a Scam?

After posting the press release from KyuuCon yesterday, it's been brought to our attention by various members of UK anime fandom that there is something fishy about KyuuCON. Firstly it appears that the venue mentioned the Plymouth Pavillions has not heard of KyuuCON or the organisers in question. The second major alarm bell is where the payments are going, into a personal bank account and not a building society account/non-profit account in the conventions name.

What's also interesting is their sudden change of heart, and the way they've just moved everything back a year. Plus this thread brought to our attention at the AyaCon Forum. At this current moment in time, based on what we have heard, we believe that KyuuCON is either very poorly organised or a cash grabbing scam, either way, we suggest you avoid KyuuCON for now.

Howl's Moving Castle Premiere in the UK

According to Anime News Network the premiere of Howl’s Moving Castle in the U.K is set to be on the 2nd of September at 19:30 hrs at The British Academy (BAFTA - Princess Anne Theatre) 195 Piccadilly London, UK, to inaugurate BAFTA's London Japanese Film Festival.

A reception hosted by the Japanese Embassy at 18:30 is to be held before the screening. Tickets are £10 for the combined event for non BAFTA members. More information may be found on the BAFTA website.

Otaku will note that this is not the first screening of Howl's Moving Castle in the UK, since the first public screening was held in Cambridge and featured a Question and Answers session with Howl's original author Diana Wynne Jones.

AmeCon 2006 Details

With AyaCon about to kick off in a few weeks, the AmeCon Crew have sent us the details of their Leicester based convention. Set to run from Friday 11th August to late on Sunday 13th in 2006 the convention looks like it's going to be good. The press release they've sent us has the full details and covers pretty much all the questions you could ask at this stage. It's great to see they've got the details sorted out even a year before the events set to run.

The guests include Monica Rial who was a real hoot at last years Amecon and interviewed really well, along with fellow voice actor Greg Ayres.

The AmeCon Crew have also decided to host a Cosplay Ball, which sounds exciting and attendees are advised to wear cosplay or formal wear (which basically means cosplay as Tuxedo Mask ^_-). The Otaku News Crew were at the first AmeCon and we've already paid the deposit for next years.

International Manga and Anime Festival Launches and Calls For Entrants

UK PSP Anime Movies

UK gamers looking forward to the September release of the Sony PSP can also expect a blitz of UMD Movies for the handheld games console, anime titles that are going to be available so far include:

- Akira
- Ghost In The Shell
- Ghost In The Shell: On The Trail Of The Laughing Man
- Ghost In The Shell: Trouble At Home & Abroad
- La Blue Girl Returns
- Transformers The Movie

All of the above should be out on (or by) 5th September 2005 and will be priced around £10 - £15 depending on the title and the retailer.

Optimum Releasing will also be releasing Appleseed on DVD and UMD on 19th September.

It should be noted that PSP UMD Movies are region locked, so a UK PSP will only play Region 2 European and Japanese UMDs and not Region 1 US UMDs. Like DVDs UMDs can support multiple audio tracks and subtitles, so a single disc can ideally come with both the subbed and dubbed version of title.

Spirited Away Open Air Screening in London

FilmFour have teamed up with Somerset House "to create a night at the movies like no other". They mention the "cutting edge technology and the splendour of the 18th century courtyard" and rightly so.

On Thursday 18th August, 6:30pm they'll be screening Studio Ghibli's superb Spirited Away, the only Japanese anime film to have won an Oscar. Tickets cost £12.50, with all phone and web bookings carrying an £1.75 charge per booking (not per ticket). As of yet it's not clear if the screening will be subbed or dubbed, but we will chase it up and post more details as soon as we find out.

MinamiCon 12 Registrations Now Open

London Anime Club President Dragon, has just informed us that registrations for the MinamiCon 12, the Southampton, UK based anime convention are now open. It's set for the 17th-19th March 2006. Registration costs £42 per person for the full weekend, and for an extra £10 you can also get a convention t-shirt.

Only 49 Places Left at AyaCon

Popular UK Anime convention AyaCon are now down to their last 49 places. The convention always proves a hit and once it has sold out getting a ticket to the event is very hard, normally people have to wait for registered members to cancel.

AyaCon 5 is set to be the biggest UK anime convention to date with 1200 fans in attendance. Currently hosting an anime convention of this size is tricky and it's always nice to know that the people running the convention have experience and a proven track record at organising anime conventions. So book now to avoid disappointment.

What will be interesting to see is where will anime conventions go after this. Anime and manga is getting increasingly popular in the UK and more events are being held all the time. Surely more people will want to go to anime conventions run by anime fans like AmeCon, AyaCon and MinamiCon, however there are a only a limited number of venues that can cater for a fan run anime convention in the UK larger than 1200 people, anything bigger and all sorts of logistical factors kick in making organising an event a lot more complex. The Otaku News Crew wonder what will happen next, will these conventions continue with the same capacity, or will they be able to find even bigger venues to hold larger events? Whatever happens we certainly look forward to future fan run anime conventions.

IMAF Winner Featured on BBC

Those alert people at UKAnime.com (who seem unable to hyperlink to us correctly when mentioning our articles) have discovered an article on the BBC Birmingham Website which reports on the talented Asia Alfasi, winner of the Kids Character Design in the IMAF 2004 competition, who drew on her heritage to create Monir a feisty young Arabian. Blood At AyaCon

The popular UK anime convention AyaCon have announced that their guests for this year will be visual kei band Blood. The last AyaCon had MegaTokyo artist Fred Gallagher who proved to be an excellent choice (a detailed report can be found here).

This seems like an interesting choice for guests, since Blood do not have a direct connection to Anime fandom, unlike MegaTokyo which is read by many anime fans. The Otaku News Crew wonder if more Visual Kei, J-Pop and J-Rock fans will register for the convention, who have no real interested in anime, with just over 300 places left at the time of writing this article AyaCon is selling out fast normally the last 200 or so places tend to go very quickly. We also wonder if the popular J-Pop/Rock party at AmeCon last year had any influence on the committee members.

It's good to see that UK anime conventions are experimenting with the type of guests they have and also take the standard anime convention in a new direction. This is the fifth AyaCon, and based on our previous experiences there the convention is normally very well run and certainlly well worth attending.

ADV Films Launches New Titles Exclusively At London Expo

Anime Costumes Required For WorldCon

We've had news from Miki Dennis who is currently organising an international costume display at Worldcon 2005. Currently she is looking for top quality anime costumes, only one or two will be selected, with no money, or prizes involved, but plenty of prestige. She promises transport and secure safe display for the costumes. If you want to take part, e-mail one full length photo per costume to Miki Dennis. The winners costumes will be seen by thousands of people, so cosplayers get submitting! ^_^

Toonami And Cartoon Network This Year

Toonami UK will be premiering new Dragon Ball Z movies from Monday 30th May. Also starting will be Pokemon Chronicles and Code Lyoko. Toonami also say that we’ll get a new series of Rave Master later in the year. HiHi Puffy Ami Yumi is also set to start on Monday April 9th at 4pm on Cartoon Network.

IMAF Announce Winners

The International Manga and Anime Festival have just announced the winners of their first international competition. The London based event started last year as a trial run and has proved very successful indeed. The entrants work was displayed in London County Hall in December. This was a very high profile event, located near the famous London Eye, with a $75,000 prize fund which even ran adverts in national newspapers. We covered the story originally here.

The Otaku News Crew would like to congratulate all the winners in this competition, especially talented artist Wing Yun Man, who is well known in UK anime fandom as part of the Sweatdrop Team, she is also a member of the Otaku News Crew and finds time post the occasional story and draw lovely artwork for us!
