Anime Limited to screen ‘Mirai’ in UK cinemas during 2018

Most likely you'll already have seen our continued efforts to bring the best new theatrical anime this year with our announcement of Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms last month, but we're not stopping there and are still hard at work building an incredible slate of films for 2018 to bring to cinemas around the UK, and today we're proud to announce another such film - the latest work from a director we're sure you'll all recognise.

Thus, we can confirm that the fourth quarter of 2018 will see us bring the exciting new film from Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children) tentatively titled Mirai - or Mirai From the Future as an alternate working title - to the UK and Ireland.

The film saw its first key visual and teaser trailer unveiled in Japan at the end of last year, and you can see that visual right here alongside our own English subtitled teaser trailer at the bottom of this post.

Needless to say, we're still some way from the film arriving in cinemas so we don't have any further specific details to share at this time, but we have plenty of exciting plans in the works to celebrate what we're anticipating to be another classic film from Mamoru Hosoda, one of anime's most well-known and recognisable directors.

The film's story is created, written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda at his own production studio, Chizu. Hiroyuki Aoyama returns as animation director alongside Ayako Hata, both of whom worked on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars and The Boy and the Beast. Both Takashi Omori and Yohei Takamatsu return as art directors from their previous work on The Boy and the Beast, while that film's producer Yuichi Saito also returns to his role for this new film.

Synopsis (courtesy of Variety): “Mirai” follows a 4-year old boy who is struggling to cope with the arrival of a little sister in the family, until things turn magical. A mysterious garden in the backyard of the boy’s home becomes a gateway allowing the child to travel back in time and encounter his mother as a little girl and his great-grandfather as a young man. These fantasy-filled adventures allow the child to change his perspective and help him become the big brother he was meant to be.

On the announcement, Anime Limited president Andrew Partridge says: ";Mamoru Hosoda is one of the most talented and accessible directors in the anime industry, and Mirai looks set to be another wonderful addition to his hugely impressive body of work. We're incredibly excited to be able to bring the joy and beauty of this director's latest film to a broad audience around the UK in 2018";.

Stay tuned to all of our usual channels over the coming months, as we share more about our plans for Mirai and when and where you'll be able to see this wonderful new film across the UK. Until then though, take care!
