Synopsis
Can a shared love overcome the fear that divides us?

Following his parent's divorce, high schooler Kai (Shōta Shimoda) moves to his father's home in a rural fishing village, whose superstitions about mermaids force the young man to repress his desire to make music. When his classmates force him to join their band however, their melodies attract the affections of Lu (Kanon Tani), a mermaid whose joy will reveal that superstitions are just that and being different doesn't mean we're not the same.

We Like It Because
At its heart, "Lu over the Wall" is a touching tale of kindred spirits and a moving exposé on the impact stereotypes and misconceptions wreak on our communities, stunningly presented wrapped in a cheery, family friendly setting complete with Masaaki Yuasa's trademark elastic and eccentric visual artistry.

"Lu over the Wall" is also a technical delight, with a charming and rounded watercolour aesthetic, charming dance sequences that harken back to days of Disney's past and a soundtrack expertly grained into the narrative flow.

Few directors can release more than one project in a year while also retaining the individual identity and high standards of each, yet Masaaki Muasa has proudly proven himself a creative force to be reckoned with.

Editor's Notes

About Masaaki Yuasa
Debuting in 1999 with Production I.G.'s "Vampiyan Kids", Masaaki Yuasa's first major release in 2004's "MIND GAME" garnered acclaim from even industry icons like the late Satoshi Kon. Since then, his filmography has grown and expanded to include short film "Kick Heart", TV series "Ping Pong: The Animation" and an Annecy nominated episode of Cartoon Network's "Adventure Time"

Following a lengthy absence from feature film, 2017 marks a triumphant return for Masaaki Yuasa with not only the eccentric "Night is Short, Walk on Girl" (released in cinemas this October), but also the magical "Lu over the Wall". Yuasa's next project, the "Devilman crybaby" television anime, will debut worldwide on Netflix next year.
