The good folks at Kotatsu Festival have sent us some details of two upcoming events. The two online workshops aimed at beginners cover Japanese Calligraphy and a Japanese Manga Introductory Workshop.
Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival are hosting these workshops for free via Microsoft Teams. Although it is free prior registration is essential. So book early to avoid disappointment.
Japanese Calligraphy - Introductory Workshop for Beginners is run by Yukiko Ayres. It's set for Saturday 29th January 2022 from 11:00 to 12:00 GMT.
Japanese Manga Introductory Workshop for Beginners is run by Shangomola Edunjobi It's set for Sunday 30th January 2022 from 12:00 to 13:00 GMT.

Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival will host 2 exciting FREE online workshops via Microsoft Teams this month, thanks to their partners Cardiff Library Service and The National Lottery Community Fund Wales, and we're all invited to take part.
Japanese Calligraphy - Introductory Workshop for Beginners
Subtitle: 'Let's Write Tiger' (The Japanese name for this year)

About this event
Suitable for young adults and adults at beginner level. This is a beginner level workshop delivered by Ms Yukiko Ayres who will introduce participants to the Japanese Calligraphy items, demonstrate kanji's basic lines and the kanji symbol for 'Tiger'. She will then assist participants in writing the basic lines and the symbol for "Tiger" with brush or pen.
Ms Yukiko Ayres is a UK based private Calligraphy tutor. She started learning Japanese Calligraphy at the age of 6 and was apprenticed in the Calligraphy school of Nihon Shodouin and became a Doujin at the age of 26.
Ms Kaori Onoda, a private Japanese Language tutor will be providing simultaneous Japanese translation, so the event will be delivered in Japanese and English.
For this session, you can use normal white paper and pen or pencil if you do not have calligraphy paper, brush & ink.

Suitable for 9yrs + (This workshop is aimed at kids but all ages are welcome.)
Shangomola is a UK based creator with a passion for creating ethnic diversity in comics. He has been drawing since childhood and obtained a degree in graphic design. He began his career when his One Page Comic 'Scarlet' took first prize in the London Graphic Novel Network A3 comic competition 2014. Since then, he's won many competitions, participated in exhibitions, and produced publications in UK.
This is a beginner level workshop aimed at breaking down what goes into creating a character, looking at the anatomy, character expressions, clothes and accessories that make the character feel unique and stand out!
The workshop will consist of a PowerPoint break down of the stages to building a character, encouraging participants to draw and get creative along the way with set tasks at each stage!
By the end of the session participants will know what to think about when creating a character and be able to apply the process to their own creative projects. They will also have a character drawn ready to show friends and family.
