The good folks at the Embassy of Japan in the UK have just revealed the details for the 17th Manga Jiman Competition. The annual competition is a chance for UK based artists to demonstrate their manga making skills. Not only that, but there's a great selection of prizes to be won from the competitions sponsors.
Here's a tip. If you do really want to win. Consider entering in the Yonkoma category (Yonoma Youth - 11, 12 or 13 or Yonkoma 14+). There are normally very few entrants for the often overlooked four panel manga section. Even the judges last year were strongly suggesting more people enter in yonkoma.
Details as follows:
We're thrilled to announce the highly anticipated launch of the 17th Manga Jiman Competition! We are back with exciting updates, open to diverse talents, and featuring an array of categories and styles! Find out this year's theme, the prizes on offer and a radical change to the format (!) by watching this launch video on the Embassy's YouTube channel. The deadline for receipt of entries is 8 January 2024.
Press release as follows:
Manga Jiman & Yonkoma Competitions
The Embassy of Japan continues its search for the best creators of comics in the UK in 2023 with the 17th edition of the Manga Jiman Competition.
Manga Jiman can be translated as 'having pride in manga' and the competition has a number of categories.
MANGA JIMAN (14 years or over)
For UK residents aged 14 or over, the competition judges will select the best stories told across 6-8 pages.
The overall winner receives a prize chosen for them by specialist art and antique dealers, the Japanese Gallery Kensington.
Runners-up will receive prizes including a Scansnap scanner from PFU Ltd, a digital camera from RICOH UK Ltd, gift vouchers for the Japan Centre, manga publications from UK manga publishers SelfMadeHero and Fanfare, luxury Japanese sweets from Minamoto Kitchoan, electrical goods from Daikin Ltd and much more!
Two categories to find the best stories told in 4 comic-strip panels:
YONKOMA 14+ (14 years or over)
The 1st prize is an original, vintage animation cel personally chosen for the winner by prize sponsors Cel-ga.com.
YONKOMA YOUTH (11-13 years)
The winner will receive an original manga page courtesy of Manga Originals.
Runners-up to both Yonkoma categories will receive a selection of fantastic Japan-related prizes.
In an exciting change to the format, entries in full colour will be accepted from this year. All creations must be original. Entrants for all the above categories are asked to create a story which contains a reference, written and/or visual, to this year's theme; 'forward'.
The closing date for entries is 5pm Monday, 8 January 2024. A list of finalists will be published on mangajiman.co.uk and prizes will be awarded the following spring. The winning stories are scheduled to be displayed in an exhibition at the Embassy of Japan in the UK in 2024.
