In what sounds like something from Serial Experiments Lain, BBC News are running an article about a Japanese MP who has opened an office in the virtual world of Second Life.
MP Kan Suzuki states that he wants "to discuss new policies with net citizens, deliver lectures and also hold meetings".
Mr Suzuki claims to be the first Japanese politician to establish an office there. Interestingly the MP could be breaking the law by doing so, the Public Office Election Law (which is over 50 years old), restricts election campaign materials to postcards and pamphlets, with officials recently deciding that web pages cannot be created or updated during the official period of campaigning for elections.
The BBC conclude that it's not clear if this will affect Mr Suzuki's plans to use his second life office to help him win re-election. Some have claimed this is just a gimmick. What the article doesn't say is what Mr Suzuki's avatar (on-line character) looks like, the Otaku News crew suspect it's probably a virtual copy of him, but we're secretly hoping it's something a lot cooler. ^_^

Everything is being turned into MMORPG's these days, largely because these are games in which the players keep giving money to the developers even after they've bought it. Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball universe seems set to get the online treatment next.
It will go online first in Korea in 2007 followed by Japan in 2008!

Fans of dating games will be pleased to hear that the nice folks from CuriousFactory and Buredo have released a free game engine and construction kit, designed at making Visual Novels easy to produce in English. In a nutshell this will allow users to create their own interactive stories, anime and manga fans will probably be most familiar with dating games, but the companies are keen to promote that you can also produce other games using their game engine.
A good story is a must, good artwork is always nice too, but there are some crafty ways around this, such as taking photos of things and then using a bit of photoshop magic. It’ll be interesting to see if any otaku take up developing games on this engine. Currently the engine is Windows only.

As much as we love the adventures of a certain boy Ninja, we're starting to wonder if the merchandising is starting to get to the silly point. You will now be able to purchase Naruto Nike trainers. We can only hope they will assist fans mould their chakra and finish those tree climbing exercises.

Even here at Otaku News, every now and then we find something that just screams hardcore otaku. It's normally something odd that only an otaku would want, but not just a everyday otaku, someone who wants to scream out to the world that they are a more extreme breed of otaku. Shuttle PC cases are cool, but can you image one with an anime paint job on the case? The example here is based on the hentai game Gift (although you wouldn't guess it's hentai from looking at the case), retailer Fast Online have a few other models too.
Shuttle have a good reputation for producing barebone systems with a smaller form factor, and have excellent build quality. Looking at the photos the artwork looks really nice and we're actually tempted to buy one since they're 39,800 JPY (which works out at $340 USD or £195 GBP), but then again, we're not into hentai.

We've just been sent the press release from JAST USA, about a rather novel PC game for a certain type of anime fan. Yep, we're talking Yaoi (or boys love). Appropriately for this kind of game, Enzai - Falsely Accused, the action takes place in a prison ^_- (our resident expert Spike's going to love this).

We've just discovered an interesting story on BBC News, about a Gamer who has purchased an island on the RPG Project Entropia.
Apparently the new owner is able to "make money from his investment as he is able to tax other gamers who come to his virtual land to hunt or mine for gold". The Otaku News crew find this story interesting because this is not a tangible item in the real world, so can easily be copied if the original game creators so desired, we also wonder what would happen if the server went down and could not be restored from back up! ^_-
