My Hero Academia Two Heroes is the first movie offering from hugely popular shonen franchise My Hero Academia. Set in a not too distant future in a world where 80% of the population have powers called quirks.



The story starts with Deku and All Might on summer vacation visiting I-Island, a giant artificial moving island fortress city that protects research into quirks and gear that can be used with quirks. The island city is inhabited by some of the world's greatest scientists, including All Might's old friend Dave Shield, a genius professor who used to team up with All Might when he was an exchange student in America. We also meet Dave's 17 year old daughter Melissa who is studying to be a scientist.



Everyone is visiting I-Island for I-Expo where super heroes and others in the hero industry can look at the latest gadgets and research. Of course with lots of important people and research around, it's a natural place for villains to show up and do villainous things!



The movie forms a standalone story set in-between series 2 and 3 of the show. You'll get the most enjoyment out of the movie if you've seen some of the TV series or read some of the manga, but it's not essential, there a few brief bits in the film explaining the world of My Hero Academia.



The movie feels like an extended episode of the TV series or a self contained story arc, which works quite well for fans of the show. The animation quality is very similar to the TV show, but without any of the lower quality filler animation. They break out the special effects and budget for the final show down with the villain, which is always nice to see on a big screen.



The trouble with a franchise like My Hero Academia, is that it has such a huge cast, so when adapting it for as movie who do you give screen time to? With such a big cast of characters each with their own fans, they've decided to stick to the core characters. Deku, All Might, Todoroki, Bakugo, Ochaco and co all get their moments fighting villains and using their quirks. The other teachers don't feature in this film.



The length of the film is just about right, it sets up the scene, then sets up the villainous scenario then lets the class get on with saving the day. The pacing doesn't lag, it doesn't drag on, you don't feel they could have cut it down a bit.



I think fans of the show will enjoy the movie as it's such a treat to see the show on the big screen. While not ground breaking, there's some interesting character development around All Might's past that fans will enjoy. The MHA Movie is pretty much what you'd expect, so it won't disappoint. It does what it sets out to do and entertain it's fans at plus ultra levels.
