Anime News Network has announced that Neon Genesis Evangelion, the hit anime that revolutionized the giant robot genre in particular and anime in general, will be debuting on Adult Swim as part of its late night line-up. No air date has been released, but the show is said to be appearing sometime in the near future.

Full Story

Produced by Gainax and directed by Hideki Anno, Evangelion gave television anime and giant robot shows a boost with its tale of Shinji Ikari, a young boy who reluctantly fights mysterious creatures called Angels piloting a bio-mechanical robot called an Evangelion for NERV, the organization run by his estranged father. While the show held remarkable battle scenes, it was the various mysteries, religious symbolism and focus on the numerous flawed characters and their psychological problems that truly made the show a hit, both in Japan and in America when it was distributed by ADV Films. It has since become a modern classic, and referred to as one of the greatest anime shows of all time.

No details have been released as to how Evangelion will be tweaked to appear on Adult Swim, once a programming block of Cartoon Network but now a separate network taking over Cartoon Network during late night hours. The first two episodes first appeared on Cartoon Network’s Toonami programming block several years ago as part of its Giant Robot Week event, which also included episodes from Dai-Guard, Martian Successor Nadesico and Gigantor. While there were some minor edits to those episodes, future episodes will require a bit more work, especially with the show’s religious symbolism and use of fan service. Despite this, Evangelion is certain to be a hit on Adult Swim and bring about new fans to the show.
