New trailer for upcoming Kiki's Delivery Service live action movie

Date: Friday December 13th 2013 [11:42] | Posted By: Voxie
Category: > Anime

I've just heard off the social grapevine that a new trailer is out for the live action version of Kiki's Delivery Service.

Youtube reactions have been so-so. I think the colour palette looks nice, and Kiki's actress looks lively, but it doesn't seem to the original Ghibli soundtrack.

It opens in Japan 1st March 2014.

Wolf Girl - The Princess Mononoke fan film

Date: Saturday September 14th 2013 [11:05] | Posted By: Franki Webb
Category: > Fandom

Any filmmaker will tell you that producing a movie is- hard work. The time, effort and sometimes budget issues can get in the way of making a vision a reality. That challenge is only intensified when it's a fan-based film, reaping no financial rewards at the end and with only the love of the story to keep them going. But that's exactly what filmmakers, Nate Drake and Georgie Donovan are doing, currently in the works is Wolf Girl, a movie about a modern teenage girl struggling to save the forest she calls home from humans, who are cutting down the trees for their own needs. She then joins forces with wolves in a bid to defend her home.

009 RE:Cyborg Cinema Review 2

Date: Monday June 3rd 2013 [14:58] | Posted By: Eeeper
Category: > Anime > Film

We're not going to give you one, but two different takes on the latest anime cinema screening of 009 RE:Cyborg. We also have an interview with the film's director Kenji Kamiyama. Here's Eeeper's take on the title.

Working off the notion that all good remakes don't try and make sense of their origins, RE: Cyborg 009 is a fresh and funky look at a classic manga and anime. If you've ever read or watched Shotaro Ishinomori's original tale then you are missing out on a great thing. Despite having a cute exterior with cartoonish designs, Ishinomori's ideas in the background tackle things like racism, war, poverty and the brutal nature of the, then, growing military industrial complex that arose after the Second World War. Kenji Kamiyama's version takes all of these aspects and posits an interesting question? If after we stop fighting nations, ideologies and groups who is left to fight? Ourselves would be the main answer but what if it's not another person but our own values, beliefs and morals? While there is a definable enemy that the main heroes fight, the best way to describe them are antagonists who are created by the situation not by themselves.

009 RE:Cyborg Cinema Review 1

Date: Monday June 3rd 2013 [14:54] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Anime > Film

We're not going to give you one, but two different takes on the latest anime cinema screening of 009 RE:Cyborg. We also have an interview with the film's director Kenji Kamiyama. Here's Joe's take on the title.

Production IG's Latest movie is a big budget action adventure based on the manga Cyborg 009 that started in the 1960's. Since then it's had several incarnations with different twists. The film was released in Japan in October 2012 and has already made its way to the UK at the BFI as part of a special screening with a Q&A from director Kenji Kamiyama. It'll also show in Scotland soon before hitting UK cinemas in June 2013 thanks to the good people from Anime Ltd. We like such a speedy turn around and hope it becomes such a regular thing for top notch titles.

Fullmetal Alchemist (Hagane no Renkinjutsushi or Hagaren for short) is a series that has made a significant mark on anime fans across the world. With the conclusion of the manga and the anime adaptation Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood over the past year, it is with great excitement that we are once again given the chance to join the Elric brothers on their second cinematic adventure - Hagaren the Movie 2011 - The Sacred Star of Milos.

For fans of the series they will enjoy return to the world of their favourite characters. Mystery, intrigue and all converge in this epic that calls into question the bonds of blood and national loyalty. The film was made to slot into the timeline of the Brotherhood series narrative. This new adventure, however, has a very different look and feel to the Hagaren previously produced by Studio Bones (株式会社 ボンズ Kabushiki Kaisha Bonzu).

Satoshi Kon has directed several popular films which generally have a cerebral dream like element to them, where the imagination, dreams and reality all mix together. Satoshi Kon was working on a feature film called Yume-Miru Kikai, which is unofficially known as Dream Machine in English.

Miyazaki at the Venice Film Festival

Date: Monday September 1st 2008 [8:34] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Anime > Film

BBC News have published an interesting interview with Oscar winning anime director Hayao Miyazaki, focusing on the release of Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea and it's screening at the Venice Film Festival. Oddly they ask about rivialy between Pixar, even though it's well known in fandom that Pixar and Studio Ghibli have strong ties, with John Lasseter and Hayao Miyazaki sharing a great friendship that was even documented on the DVD Thank You, Mr Lasseter.

The article mentions Miyazaki's advancing years, and how he will be over 70 years old when he does his next film.

UK fans will be pleased to hear that the article also mentions Ponyo will get a UK release in April 2009, although it's not clear if this will be a cinematic release or DVD release. Based on our previous experience with Ghibli releases in the UK we're guessing it will have a limited theatrical run first, before a DVD release.

Paprika misses out on Oscars

Date: Tuesday January 23rd 2007 [8:23] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Anime > Film

The nominations for the 2007 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards have been announced, no anime is running this year. Satoshi Kon's Paprika was on the shortlist of 16 animated features, but failed to be one of the three titles nominated.

Cars, Happy Feet and Monster House have been selected for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year.

Interestingly Paprika may have missed a nomination due to technical difficulties, five Oscar nominations for this category would have been allowed if all 16 films on the shortlist were screened in LA. Arthur and the Invisibles failed to get a screening when required, so the number of Oscar nominations were reduced to three in accordance to the rules.

New Highlander in June

Date: Friday January 19th 2007 [10:53] | Posted By: Jeremy
Category: > Anime

The release date for the new Highlander animated film has finally been announced. Manga Entertainment will release Highlander: Vengeance, directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and animated by Madhouse Studios, on this summer on June 5th. Both regular and special editions are planned for release.

There still remains some speculation as to whether or not the 80 minute film will do well, either with anime or Highlander fans. The franchise's popularity has gone back and forth over the years, but still remains a cult favorite. The new film, which follows the adventures of new Highlander Colin MacLeod in his quest for revenge against the Immortal Marcus Octavius and is said to cover elements not dealt with previously in either the movies or TV series, should still definitely appeal to anime fans, particularly those who favor intense martial arts sword fights along the lines of Ninja Scroll and the recent Basilisk.

Fans rejoiced when it was announced that four new movies based on the hit anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion were in the works, with the first, a prequel, set to debut in Japanese theaters next summer. With no word yet as to when the movies'll hit Western shores, ADV Films is happy to announce that the December issue of Newtype USA will feature a first look at the new movies. While there's no word as to the actual content of the article, you can expect that there should be some plot details and production art. Plenty to wet your whistle as you count down the days until the announcement of the Western DVD release. And you thought waiting for the PS3 or the Wii was bad.
