An interview with Japan Camera Hunter

Date: Wednesday July 9th 2014 [14:15] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Features

Normally on Otaku News, when we talk about otaku we mean fans of anime and manga. There are plenty of other areas worth exploring. Today, we'll introduce you to someone who loves cameras.

With the world going increasingly more digital, the photography scene around the world is seeing a resurgence of film and there is a demand among amateur and professional photographers alike for good film cameras. Film photographers enjoy the tangible nature of the photos and the fact that film slows the whole process down. Developing the picture is something to look forward to, it doesn't give instant gratification like a digital camera.

Certain cameras are now regarded as classics of their era. Japan is the natural place to go if you want a nice film camera because the country is ubiquitous for photography and cameras with so many camera brands being Japanese. While in other countries things are going on-line, physical camera shops both for new and second hand goods are a thriving business.

Bellamy Hunt lives in Tokyo. He runs a website called Japan Camera Hunter. He's passionate about photography and film. If you want a decent camera sourced from Japan, he's your man.

Our editor Joe caught up with him over a coffee in Shinjuku.

Date: Monday April 14th 2014 [15:34] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Manga

The good people from Project 6060 have sent us news of their Kickstarter Campaign for Stories of Modern Manga (1952-2012). The title of the book is self explanatory, with each double page spread tackling a year in the history of manga.

They aim to make the book as accessible as possible, it sounds like a great coffee table book, something you can just pick up and dip into.

The campaign aims to to raise $18K (USD) to publish the book. At the time of writing they've currently raised $3,693. However it's still early days and we know it's the last few hours that really count for a Kickstarter campaign.

Pirate Anime FAQ Updated

Date: Sunday April 6th 2014 [10:27] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Websites

The Pirate Anime FAQ is regarded as essential reading. We've just done a minor update adding a section about Anime Conventions and similar events to it. Geeky events like this are a great place to buy stuff from, but we urge caution as some will have excellent policies in place to stop dealers from selling pirate goods. Other events we are aware of however will not have any policy or if they do not enforce it. Often their concern is if they've sold enough tables to make a good profit. This does not just apply to small events. Bigger events also have this problem too.

London Shopping Guide Updated

Date: Monday September 2nd 2013 [16:01] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Websites

We've just updated our London Anime and Manga Shopping Guide. Japanese department store Mitsukoshi has now closed, so it's been removed from our listing. We've heard rumours that they might open elsewhere in one form or another. All is not lost though as the bookshop in Mitsukoshi's basement JP Books now has it's own dedicated shop on Denman Street, just North of Piccadilly Circus.

We've also had to remove the much loved retro gaming shop Gaming Focus, along with the Muji on Oxford Street. There are still other Muji shops around London.

Also, we like to remind people when shopping for anime goods anywhere to watch out for pirate goods. We suggest you stay informed and read The Pirate Anime FAQ. There are still plenty of places out there that do stock pirate goods.

The latest craze in Japan - eyeball licking?

Date: Friday August 2nd 2013 [14:46] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Freaky Things

We know readers of Otaku News are up to date with all the latest crazes in Japan, but have you heard about eyeball licking? If you read some news websites they state that it's the latest craze in Japan. They all give the impression that it's sweeping the country. They also interview various doctors who confirm that eyeball licking isn't a healthy thing to do. What they don't do is actually double check with anyone in Japan about this strange craze, because if they did, they'd find out that it isn't really happening. It's another one of those weird Japan stories that people just assume is true.

The Number 1 Shimbun has an excellent article by Mark Schreiber who analyses the origin of the story and how lack of any fact checking caused the article to be picked up by more prestigious news outlets.

Thanks to Matt Alt for making us aware of this story.

Play.com to end first party retail sales

Category: > Retail

We've just heard that popular on-line retailer Play.com will stop "first party retail sales" by the end of March 2013. They intend to focus on it's Marketplace business. Play.com were sold to the Rakuten Group in 2011 for 25m. With the price reflecting the close of the tax loophole that allowed them to sell their DVDs from the Channel Islands, without paying VAT.

This basically means they will not directly distribute goods, but instead act as a market place to allow third party companies to sell stuff.

Otaku Calendar - a new site from the Otaku News Team

Date: Sunday October 14th 2012 [17:02] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Websites

In the Otaku News labs we are always thinking about the best way to spread the latest news to people who love Japan.

A lot of the news we publish is about things that have a fixed date like events and releases, the sort of things that belong in a calendar. So we decided to build an Otaku Calendar, listing what's on and where to help every fan answer that nagging question:
"I'm new to fandom, what can I do in my area this month?"

Otaku Calendar is designed to be a sister site to Otaku News. We'll still cover all the stuff we normally do here, but the events will be organised differently on the Otaku Calendar.

Our ultimate (and somewhat impossible) goal is to list every event and release date of interest to otaku. In order to so we'll need volunteers to populate the calendar with events from around the world! If you're interested in helping out please get in touch by e-mail webmaster@otakunews.com.

If you've got any feedback or suggestions too, please feel free to let us know.

Shipping $36,000 worth of Japanese candy

Date: Saturday January 14th 2012 [18:58] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Websites

Every otaku loves Japanese snacks and confectionery, what makes it more interesting is finding out how much some people like it. The owners of Candy Japan have posted an interesting article about how they're selling $36,000 worth of Japanese candy over 6 months. The site has been up and running for a year and has a very simple business model. You subscribe to them for $24 a month and they send you two envelopes with sugary treats each month. Currently they have just under 300 subscribers.

This makes us wonder, is it a viable long term business? Can you get more candy for $24 a month from J-List's Candy section instead? Or is the random element of Candy Japan part of the fun?

Update: J-List have confirmed that they sell more candy than that, around $50,000 worth a month. So it goes to show there is good money in sweet Japanese things.
