Summer Explorers! 2 - Anime Screenings in London

The Japan Foundation in London have just sent us some details about their up coming anime season Summer Explorers! 2, (a year after the first Summer Explorers), the event is back in 2 parts. The first set of screenings is set to run on Saturday 30th July 2016 at the BAFTA, 195 Piccadilly, London W1J 9LN from 11:30 to 17:00. The second set of screenings will run on Saturday 6th August 2016 at Rich Mix, 35 - 47 Bethnal Green Road, London E1 6LA from 12:45 to 16:30

The line up includes some anime suitable for anyone 8 and above, with some anime is suitable for 12 year olds and above, while one is suitable for adults only.

The Japan Foundation presents Japanese Anime Screenings Summer Explorers! 2

Following the popularity of last year’s Summer Explorers, The Japan Foundation have come back with many more anime films to brighten your summer days!

Over two Saturdays this summer in London, the Japan Foundation will present a twofold programme of anime film screenings at BAFTA in Piccadilly (30 July 2016), and also at Rich Mix in Shoreditch (6 August 2016). This entertaining collection of films will provide a colourful introduction to the different aspects of Japanese animated films – a genre popular all around the world. For people who are interested in learning Japanese, there will be some Japanese Language Taster Sessions at Summer Explorers! 2 on 30 July.

Summer Explorers! 2 – Part One (30 July 2016, BAFTA)

Hanakappa: Adventure in the Butterfly Kingdom (Kazumi Nonaka, 2013, 60min)

Hanakappa discovers that his and his friends’ mothers have all been kidnapped and sets off on a journey to the "Butterfly Kingdom" to rescue them in a fun story of courage, friendship and the bonds between parents and their children.
Recommended for ages 8+ (English subtitles)

Princess Arete (Sunao Katabuchi, 2001, 105min)

Kept in a castle by her father, Princess Arete spends her days watching the world go by when one day a wizard offers to marry her and take her away, but will Princess Arete finally be free or will she just be imprisoned by another keeper?
Recommended for ages 8+ (English subtitles)

Tamako Love Story (Naoko Yamada, 2014, 83min)

A light-hearted depiction of the ordinary but fun life of Tamako, the daughter of a mochi (Japanese rice cake) shop owner, and her blossoming romance with a childhood friend, Mochizo.
Recommended for ages 12+ (English subtitles)

Summer Explorers! 2 – Part Two (6 August 2016, Rich Mix)

After School Midnighters (Hitoshi Takekiyo, 2012, 95min)

Kunstlijk, an anatomical model that stands in a school’s science room and who comes to life at night, plots a plan for revenge after three naughty students decide to vandalise and dress him up in silly clothes.
Age Classification (TBC) (English subtitles)

Mind Game (Masaaki Yuasa, 2004, 103min)

A typical love story it may seem, but things take a strange turn when wannabe cartoonist Nishi, who is given a second chance at life, is reunited with his high school crush, Myon.
Recommended for ages 18+ (English subtitles)
