The good folks from Namco Bandai have sent us details of the Tales of Graces f, which is due out in Europe (that includes the UK), the Middle East and Australia on Friday 31st August 2012.
If you can't wait until then to play it, you should head over to the London MCM Expo from Friday 25th May to Sunday 27th May 2012. Tales of Graces F will be demoed from 5pm to 5:30pm on the Saturday. Namco Bandai will also be demoing the highly anticipated game made in conjunction with Studio Ghibli and Level 5 - Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch from 6pm to 6:30pm. Fans looking for some kinect action should go to the Sunday 10:30 to 11am demo of Dragon Ball Z Kinect.
Video Games in Japan: Past, Present and Future at The Japan Foundation in London

London fans of video games will be very interested in two events hosted by the Japan Foundation titled Video Games in Japan: Past, Present and Future.
Event 1 - The Past: Game Over? focuses on how to preserve video game culture and why it's important to do so. Is set to run on Tuesday 22nd February 2012.
Event 2 - The Present and Future: Progress to the Next Level? Covers where the Japanese Video Game Industry is heading and is scheduled for Wednesday 23rd February 2012.
Both events start at 6:30pm at the Japan Foundation in London at Russell Square House, 10-12 Russell Square, London, WC1B 5EH .
Both events are free to attend, but booking via e-mail is required. E-mail event@jpf.org.uk with your name, details and those of any guests. As with all popular events we advise booking early to avoid disappointment.

Homemade Katamari Controller

On browsing the internet we've discovered a hardware hacker at play. Kellbot has built a Katamari Ball Controller for the Playstation 2. There's video footage explaining how it works along with a circuit diagram on her blog.
The Katamari controller is basically a giant trackball. The creator considered using a yoga ball, but found it impractical. We wonder if Namco will create an official trackball add on for the game? There seems to be tons of alternative controllers for consoles now, and a trackball could surely be used in more than one game? Super Monkey Balls would be great too!
Brain Training Flawed

BBC News are running an interesting article about the popular Brain Training games. The article states the games are marketed as helping improve memory, keep the mind fit and active, and even in some cases starve off dementia.
"None of the claims was supported by peer-reviewed research in a recognised scientific journal and much of it was flawed, they concluded."
The article is based research by Consumer group Which? . Apparently surfing the internet or chatting to friends would have the same effect. They also cite Dr Chris Bird a clinical neuroscientist at University College London:
"There is no evidence that using this product will have any functional impact on your life whatsoever".
Martyn Hocking, editor at Which?, said:
"If people enjoy using these games, then they should continue to do so - that's a no-brainer."
Apparently people can get the same benefit from doing a crossword. Although the article fails to mention that you can't play Chrono Trigger or Mario Kart in a crossword book. ^_-
Phoenix Wright: The Musical

Japan Probe have an interesting story about Phoenix Wright: The Musical. Performed by an all-female musical theatre group Takarazuka Revue. All the roles in the musical are played by females, including Phoenix himself.
The article states that the main demographic for the Takarazuka Revue is mostly women, split between college age and over 60s. The show opens in Japan on February 5th 2009.

Nintendo have launched a site called Pokemon GTS, to compliment the online trading system for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. It's also semi-educational since you can find Pokemon by spinning a giant globe and clicking in various cities, you then find out various stats and info about that city.
Not sure abut the pronunciation for "Hello" on the London page though. Hardly regional. The annoying Pokemon music on the loading screen? Now that's great.

Whilst the confusion over the inclusion of the Japanese voices in Ubisoft's Naruto 360 game still reigns supreme (did they never think they might release it in Japan in these post IdolM@ster days?) it seems that a Naruto themed character will appear in Rayman: Raving Rabbids 2.
This means keen fans will be able to pitch him in mini game battle against other themed Rabbids including Spider-man.

Friday 23rd of February 2007 was the official launch day of Final Fantasy XII in the UK (and the rest of Europe). The PS2 game has generated a lot of buzz in fandom. To celebrate Square Enix had teamed up with HMV to hold a launch event at their flagship HMV store on Oxford Street, central London. The first people to buy the game at 9am were able to collect special wrists bands which would in turn let them queue to meet makers of Final Fantasy XII, Akitoshi Kawazu (executive producer) and Hiroshi Minagawa (director).
The event was attended by at least 500 fans, all eager to get their games autographed. It was hosted by an MC and various questions were asked, the most important of which was regarding the PS3 technical demo, based around Final Fantasy VII, both guests mentioned that they were considering producing a full version of the game for the PS3, however it's still early days yet, so we can't really confirm anything solid.

Final Fantasy XII UK launch details

We've been sent a press release from Square-Enix about the official UK launch of Final Fantasy XII. It'll be at the Oxford Street Branch of HMV in London. The first lucky 100 people to buy a copy of the game at the event will also be given an exclusive moogle soft toy and a CD with five specially selected tracks by Hitoshi Sakimoto. The next 200 people to buy the game will also be given the CD which has been produced just for the launch event. Gifts can be secured by getting a wrist band from the store at 9am on February 23rd.
The best cosplayers will also be awarded goodies at the event. Plus there is a chance to win a trip to Japan for everyone at the event.
Final Fantasy XII cosplay contest

BBC News are reporting on the Japanese Wii launch, unusually Nintendo released the console in America first, so Japanese gamers had to wait a few weeks. 400,000 consoles were available in Japan for launch, however some customers were reported to have left empty handed as demand was greater than supply. The article also mentions how enthusiastic some people are about the Wii, with a student Cosplaying as the Wii Remote.

Nintendo have announced that is has sold more than 600,000 Wii consoles in North America just 8 days after it's launch on November 19th. Sony have sold 400,000 PlayStation 3 consoles in North America, but are having trouble meeting demand due to component issues with the Blu-ray Drive. Nintendo intend to ship 4 million units in North America, while Sony intend to ship 1 million units.
The Wii is due for release in Europe (including the UK) on 8th December, while our Australian readers can expect a 7th December launch, conveniently in time for Christmas.

Those busy folks at ADV Films UK sent us this some details of their lastest cross promotion, which is covered in Wii (Nintendo Wii that is).
In the first wave of titles for the Wii is Red Steel, a game with swords and guns is being approartely crosspromtoed with Samurai Gun, an anime title with swords and guns. Which makes a good tie in if you ask us!
In a nutshell the first run of Samurai Gun Volume 1 will contain an extra free bonus disc with a sneak peak of the Red Steel game.
While the first run of the Red Steel game will receive a Samurai Gun episode and some extra ADV materials on a bonus disc.
Game On London

Keen gamers out there will want to get to London's Science Museum as they'll be running a computer games exhibition called Game On. It's set to run from 21st October 2006 until 25th February 2007 and will feature games from the 1960's to the current day. It seems they’ll have a good mixture of console and arcade games on display and up for play, with over 100 playable games available. Interestingly enough, this exhibition will also feature the design processes involved with game production. Nintendo fans will also be pleased to hear that drawings by Shigeru Miyamoto will be only display. So for fans and wannabe games developers, it's well worth a look!
Tickets cost £8.50 for adults, with children and concessions costing £6.50. Family discounts also apply. Advanced bookings are highly recommend to avoid disappointment.
Wii Price and Date Announced for the UK

The Nintendo Wii will be launched on December 8th in the UK. Bundled with Wii Sports, one wireless controller and one nunchuck add on it will cost £179. Nintendo first party games will retail for between £34 and £39.
There will be 20 launch titles which include Zelda: Twilight Princess, Red Steel and Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz.
Additional controllers will be £29 for the Wiimote, £14 for the Nunchuck and £14 for the classic controller.
The price is pretty competative considering that it inludes Wii sports, though the Wiimote looks a little steep. Though I'm certainly hoping that One Piece will be out soonish.
Rare Games Collection Stolen

We've been passed a press release from DDR:uk, a group of hardcore Dance Dance Revolution fanatics, on the 18th of August their equipment was stolen (with the exception of their custom build DDR machine, as it too big to easily move), their £25,000 collection includes a wide variety of rare and sought after games, most of which are no longer in production, along with specialist hardware and games controllers.
Since the items in question are rather unique, we would like to ask community minded otaku to be aware of the items stolen and keep a look out for them on places like popular auction sites, specialist games dealers and other places second hand goods are traded. The DDR:uk crew are offering a reward for any information.
The DDR:uk crew also help run events at anime conventions such as the games room, which was a huge success at AmeCon 2006, with the DDR machine being a huge attraction, along with the more unusual classic games. DDR:uk also put a plea out for hardware and games donation to help replace what was stolen.
On a side note the AmeCon manga library (which is made up of generous donations from Tokyopop and Tanoshimi and is stored with the DDR:uk hardware), was also vanadilised by the same criminals, with boxes of manga thrown out onto the street into the rain, and is now spoiled as a result.
We've deliberatly posted this to all editions of Otaku News, as although the items in question were stolen in the UK, many of the items stolen are rare they're desirable internationally, so all our readers should be made aware.
PS2 Game to get Anime Treatment

The Success of Dragon Quest

Although it's a few weeks old we haven't found anyone else that's covered it yet, the Times On-line have published an interesting article about the popular RPG Series Dragon Quest, released in the US and Europe. The article mentions that the game series was so popular that in 1988 Japanese parliament passed a motion that requires the games makers to limit new releases to school holidays, as too many schools kids were skipping school to buy it!
The article goes on to mention Yuuji Horii the creator of Dragon Quest who was originally a freelance manga story writer, and was inspired to create the game after buying his first computer.
Part of the games success is down to the regular collaborators such as Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, who provides the character designs for all the Dragon Quest Games. This helps keep the game consistent through out its 20 years of releases.
The article also explains why Horii has been reluctant to release it in the UK, apparently because the game is caption based lots of the games success depends on the language you use. In Japanese Horii can phrase things to match the character on screen, but things could be lost in translation, so to avoid this voices have been added to the character captions, so the accents can emphases key character traits (the Japanese version has no voices).
Refreshingly the voice talent used for this game are British rather than American, after a lot of consideration Horii thought it would be worth the risk and hired English actors to speak in regional accents.

Japanese Xbox 360 Sales Slow

BBC News are running a story on the launch of the Xbox 360 in Japan. Apparently it hasn't been a huge sell out success like in the USA and Europe. Japanese consumers are waiting to see if the new console will take off, with only a limited selection of games compared to other countries and the limited sales of the original Xbox means that many are still waiting for the launch of the new PlayStation 3.
New Gundam Mahjong Game

Good News for Gundam Fans this Christmas as Bandai is releasing a new Mahjong Game inspired to Gundam. When you think of Emmys you normally think of TV stars winning the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Awards. This year however the Sony PlayStation has been awarded an Emmy, for Outstanding Achievement in Technology and Advanced New Media. More anime based games for Nintendo DS. According to Rumic World the game will be based on Rumiko Takashi’s Urusei Yatsura. The release which is scheduled for October 20th will retail for 5,040 Yen and its official title will be: "Urusei Yatsura: Endless Summer". UK gamers looking forward to the September release of the Sony PSP can also expect a blitz of UMD Movies for the handheld games console, anime titles that are going to be available so far include:
- Akira
- Ghost In The Shell
- Ghost In The Shell: On The Trail Of The Laughing Man
- Ghost In The Shell: Trouble At Home & Abroad
- La Blue Girl Returns
- Transformers The Movie
All of the above should be out on (or by) 5th September 2005 and will be priced around £10 - £15 depending on the title and the retailer.
Optimum Releasing will also be releasing Appleseed on DVD and UMD on 19th September.
It should be noted that PSP UMD Movies are region locked, so a UK PSP will only play Region 2 European and Japanese UMDs and not Region 1 US UMDs. Like DVDs UMDs can support multiple audio tracks and subtitles, so a single disc can ideally come with both the subbed and dubbed version of title.
National Unified Otaku Proficiency Exam

Who is the biggest otaku? Is your friend Steve a bigger otaku than you? If so why? Well publisher Biblos are going to solve this question finally by holding the first Japanese national unified otaku proficient exam in their August 5th Edition of Elfix Magazine.
They claim they want to nurture an "otaku elite to carry the otaku culture through the 21st century".
The Mainichi Daily News explain that the magazine will even grade their otaku awareness level if readers write their answers down on a postcard and send it to the Elfix staff. The best results will be printed in the October 5th edition of the magazine.
