Bad news for anime and action film fans. Anime News Network, on a report from "Hollywood Reporter", has announced that the live action film adaptation of "Battle Angel", to be directed by Hollywood heavy-hitter James Cameron, may be delayed. The only reason being given by Cameronís Lightstorm Entertainment at this time is that the storyís script is proving difficult to adapt. Despite rumors to the contrary, there has been no mention of any potential to cancel the project.
Anime fans were ecstatic when it was announced that Cameron would helming "Battle Angel", planning to use a CGI-created lead character in the tradition of "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings". The plot, that of a female cyborg bounty hunter fighting evil and corruption in a post-apocalyptic future Earth, was definitely up Cameronís alley, as he had created the "Terminator" franchise. It was probably the biggest bit of news since the announcement of a live action adaptation of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" that was in the works, with the special effects being done by Project Weta, the group responsible for the visuals in the "Lord of the Rings" films.
In the meantime, Cameron will be working on another possible film entitled "Project 880". While no plot details have been released, this other film will be shot in High Definition digital 3-D technology, which Cameron also used in his recent underwater film documentaries. "Battle Angel" will also be filmed using this same technology. While Cameron plans to work on both films simultaneously, the one that he releases will be the one that is completed first. It will also make it the first non-documentary film that the director has worked on since "Titanic", the highest grossing box office film of all time.
