Netflix Streaming Service opens in UK/Ireland

Date: 2012 January 8th Sunday [23:45] | Posted By: Eeeper

American streaming service launches in the UK and Ireland with selection of anime films and series available for streaming.
Full Story
Netflix, the U.S. based streaming and DVD rental service has quietly launched in Ireland and UK over the early morning of the 9th of January 2012. Netflix has been stating for some time now that they intended to launch their streaming only service in the UK and Ireland since early October last year.

While details regarding device availability have yet to be finalised, from details on the Netflix help pages, at present, the service is available through the Nintendo Wii console via a downloadable application found in the Wii Shopping channel, the Android platform via Android Marketplace, Apple iPhone platform via the App Store and directly through PC and Mac via the Netflix site.

Costs in the Republic of Ireland are 6.99 per month and 5.99 in the United Kingdom, with no limit as to number of titles, no individual rental fees and a healthy selection of titles at the time of the launch.

For anime customers the title list (where a series exists, Netflix have provided an episode count) at the time of launch are:

  • Afro Samurai (5 episodes)

  • Afro Samurai: Resurrection (5 episodes)

  • Beyblade (51 episodes)

  • Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight

  • Ghost in the Shell (1995)

  • Ghost in the Shell 2.0

  • Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (52 episodes)

  • Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society

  • Macross II: The Movie

  • Macross II (6 episodes)

  • Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai

  • Noein (24 episodes)

  • Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles

  • Strait Jacket

  • The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

  • The Sky Crawlers

  • Tokko (13 episodes)

The service does not give any indication as to when more titles will be added.

UPDATE: PS3 and Xbox console owners have indicated that a Netflix app has appeared for download for both consoles. UK Apple customers have reported that updating the software on the AppleTV 2 allows for Netflix UK/Ireland accounts to added and signed into.

UPDATE 2: Unfortunately, due to a mistake, the Summer Wars film was mistakenly added to the lineup. Manga UK tweeted that they are currently negotiating for the digital rights to it.
